Alter your Negative Self-Talk

Every day we're bombarded with thoughts. Eighty percent are negative, per the National Science Foundation.

If most thoughts are negative, how could it be possible to think positively? I don't believe those negative thoughts will ever go away.

However, we can choose how we respond to them and alter our negative self-talk to a more positive one.

Imagine every time you were around a friend, they disrespected, name called, insulted you, and were pessimistic about everything going on in your life.

Would you want to be around them? You probably wouldn't, so why would it be ok to allow those negative thoughts to dictate how you talk to yourself and run the show in your mind?

Negative self-talk is like an enemy who is in it, to destroy you. It's time to give those negative thoughts the boot.

Our thoughts are so powerful as they impact our feelings and actions. Our brain will expand on whatever we choose to focus on.

Philippians 4:8 says And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (NLT)

This verse mentions the words "fix your thoughts" as being intentional with how one thinks.

Just because a thought lands in your head doesn't mean you should accept it at face value. A thought is just a guess. You could come to the right or wrong conclusion.

Talk to yourself as if you are your own best friend. Identify someone you love, highly respect, and deeply care about. Think about how you might talk to them when they're in negative self-talk mode.

Visualizing this can help you develop this practice of talking to yourself more compassionately.
